UPDATE (1:00 p.m. EST): At the 1:00 press conference, officials with the Philadelphia Police Department, including the Commissioner revealed new information about the attempted execution of Officer Jessie Hartnett.  Two items of note are that the shooter reiterated his pledge of allegiance to ISIS, and that the reason he targeted police is that “police defend laws that are contrary to the Koran (Qur’an).”  The other item of note is that the weapon used was a stolen police firearm.

The suspect has confessed to the attempted murder and says he did it in the name of Islam, according to CBS Philly.

Police Commissioner Richard Ross said the suspect fired 13 shots that hit Officer Jessie Hartnett and his car late Thursday. He said the officer returned fire, hitting his assailant at least three times.

“This is absolutely one of the scariest things I’ve ever seen,” Ross said at a news conference early Friday. “This guy tried to execute the police officer. The police officer had no idea he was coming.”

The suspect ran away but was quickly apprehended by other officers, authorities said.

Ross, who was sworn in as commissioner Tuesday, said there was no apparent motive for the attack.

“Why someone would do something so absolutely evil is just beyond us,” Ross said. “It’s amazing he’s alive.”

Jim Kenney, who is in his first week as mayor of the nation’s fifth-largest city, said, “There are just too many guns on the streets and I think our national government needs to do something about that.”

His statement comes on the heels of President Barack Obama’s announcement on Tuesday of his plan to tighten gun control laws.

  1. There’s too many CRIMINALS on the street you stupid moron!! Stop blaming the guns for god sakes!! Get your head out of your butt!!

  2. “Jim Kenney, who is in his first week as mayor of the nation’s fifth-largest city, said, ‘There are just too many guns on the streets and I think our national government needs to do something about that.'”

    What a moronic statement.

  3. Someone please inform that idiot mayor that if the guyear had been armed with a knife he would have used a knife, and I doubt he purchased that gun legally in the first place. The problem is that people have an out of service give-a-fuck. No law will force them to suddenly respect human life, never mind the laws that are intended to restrict such animals in the first place.

  4. Let’s pay attention to two things here:

    1. “The other item of note is that the weapon used was a stolen police firearm.

    2. Jim Kenney, who is in his first week as mayor of the nation’s fifth-largest city, said, “There are just too many guns on the streets and I think our national government needs to do something about that.”

If this guy has such little disregard for the plethora of laws involved in illegally obtaining a POLICE FIREARM to shoot AT A POLICEMAN… I really don’t see how more gun control or “getting guns off the street” is going to help.

One of the dumbest statements ever made given the context.

  5. There is too much insanity on our streets, they have ignored mental illness for fat too long. The guns are on the streets. partly because of our government. Remember fast and furious? What happens to all the guns people are so willing to give up? Do we really trust our government that they aren’t putting some of them back on the streets knowing this kind of thing will happen, because they are encouraging it. Why hasn’t this country impeached this muslim in the white house yet?

  6. Any of you geniuses stop to think he was referring to illegal/stolen firearms, given that he said “streets?” The term streets usually implies ghettos, thugs, criminals etc… Getting guns away from bangers and violent criminals would be nice. I know there are some that advocate gun ownership regardless of criminal history, in which case, please refrain from commenting and crawl back under your rock. And before all of you jump on my ass, I’m pretty sure I own more guns than all of you combined, legally of course, so no, I’m not some anti gun libtard.
