A suspect was arrested after Danville, Ohio police Officer Thomas Cottrell was found shot dead outside a municipal building and his patrol car was missing.
Herschel Jones III was arrested after an hours-long manhunt in the small village of Danville, located about 100 miles southwest of Cleveland. He was taken into custody after he was seen running from a residence about 1:30 a.m. Monday. It is unclear if he has been charged.
Investigators said they received a tip early in the day from a woman saying Danville police were in danger because Jones, her former boyfriend, was “looking to kill an officer.” Police found Cottrell’s body some 30 minutes after the call. His service weapon and patrol car were missing.
Cottrell’s death comes hours after Officer Douglas Barney of the Unified Police Department in Salt Lake City, Utah was shot dead during a confrontation with a suspected hit-and-run driver.
Cottrell was one of six officers in the town of about 1,000 residents.
