A dispute over jail conditions has forced an entire Sheriff’s Office to resign in protest after a judge ordered the department to return prisoners back to the jail despite it being in horrid conditions and safety concerns.
According to KTUL, earlier this month a carbon monoxide leak was found inside the jail, forcing the entire building to be evacuated.
Since then, Sheriff Terry Sue Barnett has refused to return any of the prisoners, or her staff, to the jail until she’s given budget approvals to improve the conditions.
She has not received that OK.
A hearing held on Tuesday ended in more confusion according to Tulsa World.
Barnett became the sheriff in November of 2018 after the last sheriff was arrested for embezzlement.
As of right now only three dispatchers remain on payroll.
