An Oklahoma girl attending Luther High School was stabbed several times today by a fellow student during a back to school assembly.
Oklahoma County Sheriff spokesman Mark Opgrande said the 14-year-old was stabbed at around 8:29 during the school year’s first assembly. In a bizarre event, the attacker simply stood up and began stabbing the victim.
According to KTUL, the girl was air-evaced to an Oklahoma City hospital, but her current condition is unknown.
Several staff members pounced on the attacker and detained him while the school auditorium was evacuated.
Luther Public School Superintendent Barry Gunn told KTUL that parents could pick up students without charge of absence if they wished, but that school would proceed for the day.
“Obviously we can’t proceed as normal, but we are going to pretend we are.” Gunn said. “We run buses tomorrow and we come back and do the best we can, pick ourselves up and try to go back to normal.”
Oklahoma was one of the first states to allow teachers to utilized concealed handguns, though it is unknown if any weapons were drawn during the incident.
