Broadview Heights police tried to stop a car heading north on Interstate 77. Polick did not return calls or emails asking what prompted police to stop the car.
The car stopped at the Rockside Road exit and a passenger got out of the car and ran across the north and south lanes of the interstate, Polick said.
Tieber ran after the suspect with an Independence police officer.
The officers tried to place the suspect into custody, but the suspect cut Tieber in the face and head several times. Police did not say what the suspect used to cut the officer.
The officers tried to use a Taser, but it did not work. One of the officers shot him. Police have not publicly said which officer fired the shot.
Police took the driver of the car into custody.
Independence police Chief Michael Kilbane said his officers assisted once the pursuit ended up in the department’s jurisdiction.
The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation was called to the scene and took over the investigation, Kilbane said.
Police continue to investigate the incident and said more information will be released as it becomes available.
