A Toledo police officer was shot and killed just after midnight while responding to an intoxicated man at a Home Depot Saturday morning.
According to the Toledo Blade, Officer Anthony Dia pulled into the store’s parking lot and saw the man stumbling around the parking lot.
Officer Dia attempted to engage the man, who was busy arguing with another group of people.
As Officer Dia tried to speak with the suspect, he turned around with a handgun in his hands and shot the Toledo police officer in the chest.
The suspect then ran off.
Other responding officers took Officer Dia to the hospital in their cruiser, where he was pronounced dead.
After there hours of searching for the suspect, police heard a single gunshot in a wooded area. There, they found the suspect dead with a gunshot wound to his head.
Toledo’s mayor said at a press conference, “And to my dying day, I will never forget the sight of Officer Dia being wheeled out of the hospital on a gurney, his body wrapped in an American flag, flanked by about 30 Toledo police officers saluting and weeping.”
