Authorities in Louisville have released body camera footage that shows the fatal shooting of a man who charged at police officers while holding a screwdriver as a weapon. The incident took place on Sunday night.
Moments before the shooting, two officers with Louisville Metro Police discharged their tasers, but with no effect. The man then charged at one of the officers holding the screwdriver in a stabbing fashion when he was shot and killed. The officer he lunged at and one of the officers with a body camera fired the fatal shots.
Officers originally responded to the area where 45-year-old suspect, Russell Bowman, was acting erratically.
Bowman refused several commands to drop the screwdriver and get on the ground as well as briefly fled from officers on foot.
Bowman was previously a patient at Central State Mental Hospital, according to the Courier-Journal. He was reportedly arrested in 2017 for smashing windows out of a business with a crowbar.
