A Pennsylvania man got into a confrontation with Daytona Beach police at a hotel and threw a flurry of knives at six officers, hitting one in the chest area of his protective vest, authorities said.

Steven Fuller, 22, of Brookhaven, Pennsylvania, was arrested at the Plaza Resort at 600 N. Atlantic Ave, on Wednesday at 12:25 p.m. and jailed on one count of aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer and five counts of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer. He was being held Thursday in the Volusia County Branch Jail without bail.

Fuller, who told police the world was ending, said he called the officers there to kill them. During their attempt to arrest him, officers had to seek cover when he started throwing knives at them, police reported.

He threw five knives (1 folding knife and others used for personal defense), a garbage pail and nail clippers at police, Daytona Beach police spokesman Messod Bendayan said Thursday. Bendayan said photos of the knives and video of the incident are not being released.

According to Fuller’s arrest report, officers used Tasers and pepper spray on him initially without effect but he eventually was subdued by the stun guns.

On Wednesday at 11:06 a.m., Daytona Beach police were called to the Plaza Resort about a suspicious incident of a man saying he was going to kill everybody and that he was armed with weapons of mass destruction, police stated in Fuller’s arrest report.

While officers were on their way, they were alerted by dispatchers that there were reports of shots fired, investigators said.

Once at the hotel, security reported hearing no shots and officers went to the room on the seventh floor where they encountered Fuller, a report states.

The room’s door was open and an officer ordered Fuller to put down a knife he was holding but he started throwing knives at officers. One of the knives struck an officer in the chest area of the protective vest but did not injure the officer, a report shows,

“The defendant (Fuller) continued to throw knives at us while we remained in cover,” officers wrote in their report. “After the defendant (Fuller) had run out of knives to throw at us, he began to throw other objects that were in the room.”

Police said they then engaged Fuller using their electric stun devices and pepper spray but they didn’t work on him at first.

“The Taser was not providing any effects,” officers reported. “The desired effect of the OC spray (pepper spray) was working against the defendant.”

When Fuller stood up from the chair he was in an officer redeployed his Taser, this time knocking him down, and he was arrested, police said.

Multiple Taser probes were removed from Fuller and he was taken to jail after he was medically cleared at the hospital, police said.
