On Thursday, December 29, 2016 at approximately 9:14 PM Officer Chris Bumpas with the Weatherford Police Department conducted an investigative traffic stop on a vehicle in the parking lot of Tequila Bar and Grill located at 2150 Tin Top Road in Weatherford. The vehicle involved in the investigative stop was occupied by two white males and one white female.

Officer Bumpas requested a back-up unit who soon after arrived on scene. Officer Bumpas discovered one of the male suspects had a warrant for his arrest. As officers attempted to arrest the male suspect, he became combative and began to strike Officer Bumpas in the head with a metal flashlight. During the struggle, the second officer/back-up officer deployed a TASER and it did not have any effect on the suspect as he continued to assault Bumpas. As the struggle continued, the second officer fired his weapon and struck the suspect. Preliminarily, it appears that one of the shots fired by the second officer at the suspect also struck Officer Bumpas in the abdomen.

The officer that fired his weapon has been placed on routine administrative leave per department policy. The suspect remains in the hospital and is currently listed in “guarded” condition. Upon his release, he will be transported to the Parker County Jail on the original warrant and the additional charge of Aggravated Assault on a Peace Officer.

Officer Chris Bumpas was taken into surgery to repair the injury to his abdomen. Officer Bumpas is stable and appears to be recovering well at this time.

The Texas Rangers will take the lead in the investigation which is standard procedure for the Weatherford Police Department in officer involved shootings. Additional information may be made available as the investigation continues.

THIS IS AN UNEDITED PRESS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE WEATHERFORD POLICE DEPARTMENT
