EARLIER: A massive manhunt is underway in Delaware County, Pa., adjacent to Philadelphia, after a police officer was shot and severely injured Friday.

The unidentified officer, 25, was responding to a report of drug activity in the borough of Folcroft when he was ambushed and shot three times, WPVI-TV, Philadelphia reported.

The incident occurred near the Folcroft police station, and the police offer was shot in the neck, face and shoulders, WCAU-TV, Philadelphia, reported.

He was taken to Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital in nearby Darby, then airlifted by helicopter to Penn Presbyterian Hospital’s trauma ward in Philadelphia.

His medical condition has not been revealed.

The manhunt for the assailant includes train tracks near the site of the shooting. Train service on the Wilmington/Newark Line of SEPTA, the local transportation authority, was suspended until further notice. Amtrak also stopped two trains traveling north toward Philadelphia because of police activity on the tracks.

Police asked residents to stay in their homes during the manhunt.
