Jul. 19—DRACUT — Officer Sunny Nguyen has officially resigned from the Dracut Police Department after news broke of his alleged involvement with an 18-year-old student at Dracut High School.

Nguyen, who worked at Dracut High as a school resource officer, submitted his resignation letter Wednesday, according to a press release. Nguyen previously was on paid administrative leave pending the conclusion of an investigation into the alleged “inappropriate contact.” It’s still unclear when Nguyen was initially placed on leave.

Dracut Police Chief Peter Bartlett confirmed the report through the press release. The investigation remains active and will be completed despite Nguyen’s resignation.

According to his now-removed LinkedIn profile, Nguyen joined the department in May 2019 after working for the Middlesex Sheriff’s Office as a correctional officer. He also served as a security guard for several local organizations, including Lowell General Hospital. He graduated from UMass Lowell and Lowell Catholic High School.
