A New Jersey police officer who left a shooting scene to take a shaken 7-year-old girl to police headquarters has been demoted.
After driving the daughter of a murder victim to the police station, Captain Marshawn Love of Asbury Park Police Department was demoted to Sergeant and suspended for 120 days following city management upholding charges of incompetency, neglect of duty and three other counts.
At the time of the incident (which took place last year), off-duty Neptune Police Sergeant Philip Seidler pursued and fatally shot his ex-wife, Tamara. The little girl was the daughter of the two individuals involved and had witnessed the incident.
While Love responded to the scene, he left with the child, saying he was not the commanding officer on scene. However, authorities say that Love was the senior officer on-site and should never have left.
According to CBS News, Seidle received 30 years in prison and love is appealing his suspension.
