A law enforcement officer with the San Antonio Police Department has been placed on leave after opening fire on a young man who stole his car.

The incident, which took place in November, has been under investigation and has only recently resulted in the suspension of Miguel Leal.

Leal, who has been with SAPD for 11 years, reportedly tracked down the vehicle after it was stolen from his son.

Upon sighting the vehicle, Leal opened fire.

An 18-year-old was in the vehicle and crashed it shortly after.

When confronted by law enforcement, the suspect tried to run, police report.

According to KENS5, the suspect was caught and charged with Aggravated Robbery and Evading Arrest.

At the time of the robbery, Leal reported that his ballistic vest was in the trunk of the Dodge Charger that was stolen.

It is unknown what repercussions -administrative or legal- Leal will face.

The SAPD Shooting Team and the Internal Affairs Unit have been conducting separate but concurrent investigations.
