The driver shot by police near Evans late Wednesday night following a high-speed pursuit — the 10th officer-involved shooting in Colorado in just eight days — was an off-duty Adams County sheriff’s deputy now hospitalized in critical condition.

Authorities have not released any information to explain what prompted the shooting by an officer with the LaSalle Police Department, or why the off-duty deputy led police on a chase.

Adams County sheriff’s Sgt. Dan Monares confirmed the driver shot Wednesday night was a deputy with the sheriff’s office, as was first reported by Denver7, but declined to identify him.

Greeley police said in a news release that the deputy was in the Intensive Care Unit, but did not provide any other information about the law enforcement officer.

The LaSalle officer — who has not been identified — shot the deputy following a chase involving multiple police agencies through rural Weld County towns on northbound Highway 85 late Wednesday night.

Police began pursuing two vehicles that were driving at 90-plus mph out of Platteville around 10:25 p.m., and confronted one of the drivers after a vehicle stopped near 42nd Street and Highway 85 near Evans, according to Greeley police.

The shooting victim was transported to the North Colorado Medical Center. The other vehicle involved in the chase got away Wednesday night.

However, police said on Thursday that they later identified and contacted the occupant of the second vehicle. It’s not known whether that person is facing charges.

On Thursday morning, police had said they were investigating whether the two vehicles were involved in their own chase or were drag racing.

The Greeley news release stated that police have not completed their interviews with all witnesses and do not plan to release certain information “to maintain the integrity of the investigation.”

The 19th Judicial District Critical Incident Response Team is investigating the shooting.

Anyone who may have information about the chase is asked to called Lt. Kevin Halloran at the Weld County Sheriff’s Office at 970-400-2837 ext. 2837, or Sgt. Aaron Walker at 970-400-5807.

Wednesday night’s incident was the third officer-involved shooting that day in Colorado, and the 10th statewide in just eight days.
