An off-duty police officer and his passenger are safe after a late-night carjacking that turned into a gunfight in a south Chicago neighborhood.

According to CBS Chicago, an SUV pulled up behind the stopped car at an intersection, bumped into it, and then several men with weapons got out and approached the vehicle.

The suspects instructed the off-duty officer, who was driving, and his passenger to get out and walk away.

The officer and passenger did as they told.

When he got a safe distance, the officer then turned and began firing his weapon at the suspects.

All of the suspects got into the two vehicles and drove away.

Police say there were no injuries and are currently trying to locate the officer’s stolen car.
