In what some are sarcastically describing as one of mayor Bill De Blasio’s new crime fighting initiatives, the NYPD is posting flyers asking J’Ouvert festival participants, politely, to not shoot or stab each other.

The J’Ouvert festival occurs before and at dawn and is the first event beginning the West Indian American Day Parade which occurs every year in New York.

Last year two people were killed during the J’Ouvert pre-parade parties, including Carey Gabay, an aide to New York governor Andrew Cuomo.

Social Media reactions to the flyers have been mixed, with some finding it humorous that the NYPD has to remind residents and visitors such common sense instructions, while some finding the implication racist.

  1. Saint Louis City has plastic yard signs all over to remind residents “We must stop killing each other”. Still 124 murders as of today.

I’m sure this will work better in NYC though.
