The NYPD recently released footage of the fatal shooting of a young man who held his mother hostage.

The incident, which took place in late December of last year, unfolded after police were called to the residence of Michael Dotel.

Dotel was reported to be on drugs at the time, and officers found the man armed with a knife and with his mother in a chokehold.

Officers of the 52nd Precinct attempted to talk Dotel down to a peaceful resolution but ultimately failed.

“Do it,” Dotel said, urging police to shoot him. “She’s gonna get it. Shoot me. Shoot me.”

After it became apparent the mother was losing consciousness, Officer Alex Morgese fired a single round at suspect Michael Dotel’s head, mere inches from the hostage’s face.

Dotel was killed instantly.

Witness testimony and body camera footage paint a fairly straightforward narrative.

“I was standing next to the officer. The officer told him three times to (put) down the knife, let her go. He said, ‘Either kill me or I’ll kill her,’” the victim’s husband said.

According to the New York Post, the investigation is ongoing.
