SOUTH BEND — Notre Dame football player Javon McKinley was charged Monday with three misdemeanors, including two counts of battery, after reportedly punching two University of Notre Dame Security Police officers.
McKinley, a 20-year-old junior and a wide receiver on the football team, was arrested early Sunday by campus police. On Monday, he was charged with two misdemeanor counts of battery resulting in bodily injury and one C misdemeanor count of illegal consumption of alcohol.
McKinley arrived on campus in an Uber just before 4 a.m. Sunday, according to a probable cause affidavit. McKinley was reportedly unresponsive in the back of the vehicle and Notre Dame personnel attempted to help wake him and take him to his residence hall.
After finally waking the student, Notre Dame officers Adis Ibrekic and Laurie Steffen began to help McKinley to his residence hall, but he reportedly stopped walking and refused to continue. The two officers said they could smell alcohol on his breath and believed that in his condition he required assistance.
The officers reportedly told McKinley they wanted to get him out of the cold, but he tensed up and tried to leave in the opposite direction of his dorm, according to court documents. The officers said they identified themselves to McKinley as campus police, but were unable to gain control of him.
In their efforts to restrain McKinley, he reportedly punched both officers, according to court documents. McKinley was eventually restrained with the assistance of Notre Dame firefighters who also responded. He was transported to the St. Joseph County Jail.
The result of a breathalyzer administered at the jail was consistent with the consumption of alcohol, according to court documents.
McKinley was released from jail Monday and has a court date scheduled for Feb. 28.
The 6-foot-2, 219-pound McKinley has played in 10 games in his three seasons with the Irish. The Corona (Calif.) Centennial product played in four games in 2018.
