The Mount Holly Police Department is in mourning after one of its officers was shot and killed while responding to a breaking and entering call at a local car wash on Friday morning.

According to WBTV, four officers, including Tyler Herndon, arrived on the scene and confronted the suspect, later identified as Joshua Funk.

When the officers tried to stop Funk, he turned and fired at them, striking Herndon. The other officers returned fire.

Herndon was transported to the hospital where he died several hours later.

Funk was also hit by an officer’s shot, though he was treated for minor injuries and will survive.

Funk is now being charged with murder.

The three other officers involved in the case have been placed on administrative leave, as per policy.

Herndon had been with the department for less than two years.

Now, the community is rallying around it’s officers and donating money to help the slain officers family.

The State Bureau of Investigation is now completing an investigation into the incident.
