Surveillance video has been released in the case of a deadly encounter involving a Cincinnati police officer and accused shoplifter.

The violent attack happened on Sunday after police say 25-year-old Jawari Porter pulled off a robbery at Kroger’s market.

Store surveillance video shows Porter threatening the security officer with a knife, as he’s exiting the store. After two Cincinnati police officers watched the security video, they put out a description of the suspect and went searching for him, Local 12 reports.

Porter was spotted on 5th Street, near Government Square, where the officers attempted to detain him. Before Officer Anthony Brucato had the chance to exit his patrol car, Porter allegedly started attacking him with the knife– through the open car door.

The Hamilton County Prosecutor said, in his opinion, the shooting was justified and approved the release of the surveillance video.

The leader of the local Black Panthers group called the police chief a liar, as he protested outside District 1, calling this “another cover up.”

But Chief Eliot Isaac said, during a news conference, that Officer Brucato had no alternative… he was being attacked with a knife and had no other course of action but to defend himself.
