Public internet kiosks in New York City have been disabled after it was discovered that they were being used -frequently- to watch porn and sometimes commit lewd acts like masturbating.
According to Digital Trends, the LinkNYC kiosks that were strategically placed all over the busiest parts of the Big Apple in an effort to help citizens “save data on their mobile plans, call relatives across the country, and get a much-needed quick charge.”
However, being New York City, they were eventually commandeered (often) for more erotic purposes.
“We … know that some users have been monopolizing the Link tablets and using them inappropriately, preventing others from being able to use them while frustrating the residents and businesses around them,” the LinkNYC team wrote in an announcement. “The kiosks were never intended for anyone’s extended, personal use and we want to ensure that Links are accessible and a welcome addition to New York City neighborhoods.”
Less than eight months after the kiosks were introduced, it was discovered that they were frequently being used to watch pornography as well as serving as homeless gathering points, public drinking and drug use venues, particularly in the Manhattan area along 8th Avenue.
“As New Yorkers ourselves, we want LinkNYC to provide the best possible experience for Link users and the communities around them,” LinkNYC said.
LinkNYC has since begun “removing web browsing on all Link tablets while we work with the City and community to explore potential solutions, like time limits.”
