When Coral Springs police officers arrived on the scene of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas school shooting in Parkland, Florida, they were reportedly stunned to find that 3 Broward County Sheriff’s deputies as well as the BSO school resource officer Scott Peterson had not entered the building where a psychopath was gunning down students.
According to CNN’s Jake Tapper, who claims to have sources within the Coral Springs Police Department, there is a resentment among their officers among what they perceive as a dereliction of duty on the part of BSO deputies to not enter building 12, where the shooting was taking place.
When pressed, the PIO stated, “the Coral Springs Police Department will speak on behalf of our officers and their response in that incident,” she said. ” We will not speak on behalf of Broward Sheriff’s deputies and their response to the incident,” according to CNN.
Though CNN’s reporting of issues surrounding law enforcement has previously been antagonistic, particularly following the events of the Ferguson, Missouri incident where they promoted the false narrative “hands up, don’t shoot,” their reporting on this is at least worth noting.
Additionally, the Coral Springs Police Chief reportedly stated in an internal email obtained by CNN that, “I understand that another agency has given the impression that it had provided the majority of the rescue efforts, and that the tremendous work of the Coral Springs Police and Fire Departments has not been recognized. Please know that this issue will be addressed, and the truth will come out in time. The focus for us now, however, must be on healing — for ourselves, our families, our community and those residents surrounding us. While recognition is not the reason we choose to do what we do, our Commission, City Manager and residents are well aware of the actions our members took in the face of danger and the heroes that you are.”
This new information comes on the heels of the press conference where BSO sheriff Israel ripped into SRO deputy Peterson for not entering the building where the shooting was taking place, allegedly waiting outside for 4 minutes of the reported 6-minute massacre.
