Virginia Beach Police are still investigating an overnight shooting that left multiple people injured, including an officer, and at least one person dead along an oceanside area of the city.
According to Virginia Beach Police, the mass shooting happened around 11:30 p.m. Friday evening. At least eight people and an officer were transported to the hospital with varying degrees of injury. Some are minor, including the officer, and others are life-threatening.
Police also say an officer did open fire and killed the armed gunman during an exchange of bullets.
The suspected shooter has died due to his injuries.
Police have not released a motive or what may have prompted the suspect to begin opening fire.
The officer who used his weapon has been placed on administrative leave pending an investigation. This is a standard operating procedure.
