The mother of a girl who was fighting with a sixth-grade girl outside of Olsen Middle School earlier this week has been arrested after she was seen on video joining the fight and punching the girl.
Sabrina Thomas, 50, of Hollywood, was arrested Thursday on charges of child abuse without great bodily harm, battery second subsequent offense and contributing to the delinquency of a minor after video of the fight circulated online, the Broward Sheriff’s Office said Friday.
The fight happened about 3 p.m. Tuesday near the school’s campus in the 300 block of Southeast 11th Terrace in Dania Beach, the Sheriff’s Office said.
Video sent to the South Florida Sun Sentinel showed one of the minors aggressively approach the sixth-grade girl before suddenly grabbing her hair and throwing her onto the sidewalk. Moments later, an adult woman started repeatedly hitting the girl in the chest and face as the other minor held onto her hair, the video showed.
An onlooker shouted, “That’s a child!” in the video as the woman continued to assault the girl, dragging her on the ground by her shirt.
The Sheriff’s Office said Thomas hit the sixth-grader multiple times and pulled her hair.
Special Victims Unit detectives began investigating and later identified Thomas as the woman in the video. Court records show Thomas has previously been arrested several times on felony charges.
Thomas is being held in the Broward Main Jail pending her release on bond. Attorney information was not available Friday afternoon.
