An investigation into a “theft” turned into a night of celebration with the Stanely Cup for a group of Missouri officers.

The city posted about the joke on its Facebook page.

In the post, Clayton PD said it had “detained” St. Louis Blues starting goaltender Jordan Binnington Thursday night after the goalie had “stolen” game 7 from the Boston Bruins by beating them 4-1.

The win gave the franchise its first ever NHL championship.

Officers eventually “released” the goalie and cup.

The team will hold a victory parade through downtown St. Louis on Saturday.
