A Simpson County Sheriff’s deputy is dead after being ambushed and shot by a mental patient with his own gun, and that suspect is now on the run.

According to WJTV, Deputy James Blair was transporting the suspect to a local mental health institution after Blackwell’s family reported him. While at the facility Blackwell ambushed Blair, took his gun, shot the deputy, and then sped off in the deceased deputy’s vehicle.

Blackwell is considered armed and dangerous and is still on the loose.

He was shirtless and only wearing boxer shorts when he fled the facility.

The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation has issued a Blue Alert as they search for the suspect.
