A South Carolina mayoral candidate was arrested and charged with filing a false police report after she posted a staged Facebook Live video that showed an alleged kidnapping by her opponent.
According to the State, Sabrina Belcher has been charged with conspiracy and filing a false police report.
Sumter Police say that Belcher was using the incident to smear her opponent, and had plans to stage other videos to discredit her other opponents in order to sway public support towards her.
Belcher was taken to the hospital to be examined on Wednesday night and was released after a few hours.
A second person, a man, has been arrested and charged as well.
Police say the two conspired and came up with the idea just days prior before the staged attack.
There are six candidates running for the position of mayor in the small town east of Columbia, South Carolina.
Belcher has not said if she will drop out of the race.
