A South Carolina sheriff will spend the next year in prison and has been officially removed from his public office after a jury found him guilty of misconduct.

According to WYFF, Greenville County Sheriff Will Lewis had non-consensual sex with his then 22-year-old assistant, Savanah Nabors, during a work retreat to Charlotte, NC in 2017.

Nabors was hired a year before and given a salary of $62,000 a year, which is more than double what a sheriff’s deputy makes.

Nabors was also given a county-paid car and parking space, though the position does not qualify for either.

Nabors testified that she was given these perks as a way to manipulate her into having sex with Sheriff Lewis, which she refused.

In 2017, while on the budget trip, both Nabors and Sheriff Lewis went out for dinner and drinks. Lewis testified that she returned to her hotel room and fell asleep. She woke up to the Sheriff having sex with her. Sheriff Lewis said the sex was consensual. Nabors denied his claims and accused him of sexual assault.  Nabors and Sheriff Lewis reached a $100,000 settlement in the dispute after Nabors filed a civil lawsuit last year. That prompted the state investigation.

During the sentencing, Judge Thomas Cooper Jr. told the former sheriff, “My sentence unfortunately for you is going to give you a lot of time to think about this. Put into perspective your life with your family, your community, your God. I’d advise you not to squander or waste that time.”

Lewis had asked for home confinement so he could stay with his wife and children, but the judge sent him to prison.

Governor McMasters immediately issued a full removal of Sheriff Lewis’ title and said a special election will be held.
