The man who shot a Jacksonville Sheriff’s Officer on Tuesday before being fatally wounded has been identified by authorities.

38-year-old Jeffrey Alan Martin has been identified as the man responsible for the fatal shooting of JSO Officer Taylor Smith.

A Jacksonville resident, Martin had no criminal record in the Duval County court system or Florida Department of Corrections.

At the time of the incident, Martin had been driving around the parking lot of the Baptist Medical Center when a security officer approaches his vehicle to question what he was doing.

According to Jacksonvilleonline.com, Martin then created a scene, instructing law enforcement officers to shoot him as he fled.

A vehicular chase ensued, and Martin rammed two patrol cars before crashing.

Undeterred, Martin ignored police commands to surrender and opened fire, striking Smith in the face.

Martin was then downed in a hail of bullets, succumbing to his wounds.

JSO Sheriff T.K. Waters released a statement stating that Smith was recovering, although he was still in critical condition.

No motive has been determined.
