Sept. 22–Volusia deputies shot and killed a man they say fired at them during a traffic stop late Monday night.
A pregnant woman was also shot in the shoulder during the gun battle and was flown to a local hospital, according to the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office.
Neither of the two deputies involved was injured.
Deputies said they pulled over the GMC truck about 11:30 p.m. after noticing it had a burnt-out taillight while driving west on State Road 40, just west of County Road 3 in Barberville, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
The two deputies approached on both sides of the truck and talked with the woman driving and her male passenger for about two minutes. That’s when deputies said the man pulled a gun and started firing at both deputies, according the Sheriff’s Office.
Both deputies shot back, hitting and killing the man.
It’s unclear who shot the woman.
Deputies said they found two guns inside the truck.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating, along with the Sheriff’s Office. Both deputies have been put on paid administrative leave pending the investigation, which is typical with all officer-involved shootings.
The Sheriff’s Office has not released the names of anyone involved.
