The Louisville Metro Police Department is under more scrutiny after it was revealed a training officer accidentally discharged a loaded weapon, striking a recruit and injuring them.

According to WDRB, the incident happened during a training exercise earlier this week. The recruit was struck in the chest. He was wearing a bulletproof vest and suffered minor injuries.

In a statement, LMPD said “Although the discharge appears to be accidental, LMPD recognizes this incident as a serious training failure, and it is swiftly being addressed.”

Training is a serious concern for the LMPD. Earlier this week the Department of Justice released an investigative report into LMPD practices and policies, and training was spotlighted as a serious concern.

“Louisville Metro and LMPD have also failed to provide police officers and other with the support and resources they need to do their jobs effectively and lawfully. Our investigation uncovered deficient training,” AG Merrick Garland said.

The training officer has been placed on administrative leave until an investigation is complete.
