The Lafayette police SWAT officer who was killed Thursday in the line of duty has been identified as Cpl. Segus Jolivette.
Jolivette, identified as a hostage negotiator, was killed during a standoff and hostage situation Thursday in Jeanerette. Another SWAT officer was shot and two others were struck by bullet fragments. Their injuries were described as not life threatening.
Lafayette Consolidated Government officials have not confirmed the fallen officer as Jolivette or released the names of the others injured.
Iberia Parish President Larry Richard, on his official Facebook page, on Friday released the name of the fallen officer.
“This brave officer made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our community, demonstrating unparalleled courage and commitment,” Richard wrote. “His legacy of bravery and dedication will forever be remembered.”
A candlelight vigil in remembrance of Jolivette is scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday at Jeanerette City Hall, 1010 Main St.
Lafayette’s SWAT team was among several regional law enforcement agencies who responded to calls for assistance Thursday after Jeanerette Marshal’s Office officers attempted to serve a warrant at a residence. The subject of the warrant then allegedly took two people in the residence as hostages and barricaded himself in the home.
The Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office has identified the suspect as 31-year-old Nyjal Hurst.
