An East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s deputy died in an early Thursday morning car crash while he was on his way to work.

42-year-old Steven Whitstine had been with the sheriff’s office for eight years. His K9 officer, Six, suffered minor injuries in the crash and was taken to a local veterniary hospital.

According to Sheriff Gautreax, it was a one-car accident. The sheriff says Whitstine veered off the road, struck a tree, then struck a bridge, before landing upside-down in a canal.

An investigation into what caused the crash, as well as an autoposy, will be performed.

Sheriff Gautreax pointed out he hired Whitstine away from the Baker Police Department soon after he was elected to the position.

Whitstine leaves behind a wife and children.
