To Los Angeles Police Department has released footage from a fatal shooting in the Northridge area, revealing the split-second decision the officer had to make in order to live to patrol another day.
The incident, which took place around 11 AM on August 27, involved LAPD officers from the Devonshire Division.
While on patrol, officers approached 24-year-old Angel Ledesma, who had been loitering outside of a building.
The officers asked if Ledesma lived at the residential building and dismounted their vehicle to confirm his claims via ID check.
Within moments, Ledesma produced a knife and fled from officers, leading them on a foot chase.
According to FOX LA, Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics pronounced Ledesma dead at the scene.
A subsequent review of the footage revealed that Ledesma did in fact have a knife and posed a threat to the officers.
The investigation is ongoing.
