My name is Tommy Lefever. I’m originally from South River, NJ and I’ve been a police officer for 5 years. I got my start working for the Atlanta Police Department and have since begun the next stage of my career with the Brookhaven Police Department in Metro Atlanta. I have competed in amateur boxing to raise money for the Atlanta Police Athletic League and I am excited to be now be able to fundraise for such a worthy cause with BPD. I am proud to be brawling for the Brookhaven Police Explorer Program.
The BPD Explorers Program allows those in our community aged 14-21, learn about careers in law enforcement in a hands on, challenging environment. Our Explorers learn the reality of life in Law Enforcement with an emphasis on personal safety, community involvement, and professionalism.
Any money raised for the program will go a long way towards giving these young people an opportunity to learn leadership skills, police protocols, and participate in hands-on projects to give them a real feel for whether or not this career is the right one for them. Some of the activities Brookhaven Police Explorers participate in include police ride-alongs with on-duty police officers, regional/state/national competitions, practical demonstrations, and traffic or crowd control for city functions and events. While some their age are out on the street committing crime, our explorers are out on the street volunteering their time to make our city a better place.
My father was a cop for 26 years. You could say he was my Explorers Program. I was very fortunate to know at a young age what I wanted to do with my life and to have a goal to work long and hard for. The Explorers Program helps to clear that path for those that may not have gotten the exposure otherwise. In a day and age where police officers seem to be misunderstood across swaths of our population, I have a special respect for young people that still want to wear the badge for the right reasons. Our Police Explorers work hard and deserve a lot of credit for taking up interest in a life of public service. They are a value to their community and they give me reason to be optimistic about the future of the law enforcement profession in our country. Win or lose, I’ll gladly take a black eye to support each every one of them.
Donations of any size are greatly appreciated and can be made here.
