An Albany police officer shot and wounded a man armed with two knives on Christmas Eve, police said.

Albany police were attempting to arrest Thomas Leonard Jones, 51, on the allegation that he violated a restraining order.

When Officer Jim Estes approached Jones about 6 p.m. in the area of Southeast Jackson Street and Ninth Avenue, he said Jones told him he wasn’t going back to jail and advanced toward him with the knives, ignoring his commands to drop them, according to police.

Estes fired at Jones, wounding him in the leg. He was taken by ambulance to a local hospital for treatment, police said.

The Linn-Benton Major Crimes Team responded to the scene. Corvallis Police are leading the investigation.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to contact Corvallis Police Lt. Dan Duncan at 541-766-6986.
