A 12-person federal jury handed down a guilty verdict in the excessive force case against former Louisville police detective Brett Hankison.
According to the Associated Press, the jury deliberated on the excessive force charge for 20 hours across three days.
This was the first conviction of a Lousiville police officer in the deadly 2020 drug raid that killed Taylor, who was sleeping in her bed. The other officer charged in Taylor’s death took a plea deal.
Hankison fired 10 shots during the raid. None of the shots hit Taylor. He also faced state wanton endangerment charges in 2022 but the jury was deadlocked and acquitted him on those charges.
The federal conviction carries a maximum sentence of life in prison. Hankison will be sentenced on March 12th.
