After being demoted and fired by Milwaukee’s Police & Fire Commission in August, Alfonso Morales is set to return to work on Monday after a judge ruled the decision to relieve him of his duties as, “flawed.”
According to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, Morales was never given a reason why he was being demoted in August. He then retired and sued the Commisison for a judicial review.
That review is now in, and it’s favorable for Morales. He now essentially has two paths for retribution. He can either return to work on Monday, knowing that there is currently an acting Police Chief already there, or seek a financial settlement from the city and fully retire.
This all is happening as the commission is getting close to naming a new police chief. They are down to their final two candidates and face a deadline of Wednesday to select one of them, as the acting Police Chief will retire on just before the Christmas holiday.
The dispute between Morales and the commission comes from a set of directives that were issued by the commission back in July. Morales said he intended to comply and put the directives in place, but in just about a month commission deemed he had not moved quickly enough and voted unanimously to demote him.
Morales argues he was committed to the process, but needed more time; something the city’s attorney’s office agreed with.
