A New Orleans inmate who briefly escaped custody and sat on a roof ledge behind the criminal district courthouse Tuesday (July 5) got away after being granted a bathroom break on his way to court, the Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office said.
Devontay Jenkins, an 18-year-old defendant facing burglary and weapons charges, managed to slip away from supervising deputies and climbed atop a ledge of the shuttered jail facility known as the Old Parish Prison, where he stripped to his underwear and ignored orders to come down for nearly an hour.
Authorities said Jenkins threatened to jump from the ledge, about 2 1/2 stories above ground, after his escape shortly before 8 a.m. But Jenkins was pulled to safety at 8:57 a.m. by deputies who offered Jenkins cigarettes from a nearby deserted guard tower.
