An Indiana sheriff’s deputy is currently battling for their life after they were shot and critically injured during a Saturday evening welfare check.
According to WANE, Posey County Sheriff’s deputies responded around 7 p.m. Saturday to perform a welfare check.
Deputies approached the home when the homeowner began firing rounds of bullets at them. Deputies returned fire at the man, who was shot and injured.
After the gunfire ended, deputies found one of their own down.
Both the deputy and the suspect were transported to the hospital for treatment.
The Posey County Sheriff’s Office confirms the deputy is in critical condition. They have not released the deputy’s name.
The condition of the man is unknown.
The Indiana State Police are now stepping in to investigate the incident.
