A twenty-month-old tot was stabbed and baked in an oven in Mississippi on Monday night, according to authorities in Bolivar County.
BCSO Sheriff Kelvin Williams said his deputies were dispatched to a home in the town of Shaw at the behest of local PD, after a family member reported the incident.
“A family member came home and saw that something had happened,” Williams said at a press conference on Tuesday. “They found the child in the oven and called the Shaw Police Department who in turn contacted us to assist in a homicide investigation.”
When deputies arrived to back up Shaw Police, they weren’t ready for what they saw.
“At the scene we found a 20-month-old deceased female,” Williams said. “The official cause (of death) is still under investigation but authorities have reason to believe that the child was stabbed and burned. The child was found inside of the oven in the residence.”
According to the Clarion Ledger, the child’s body was taken to the Mississippi State Crime Lab for autopsy.
The child’s grandmother has been taken into custody. It is unknown if the baby was dead or alive when she was placed in the oven.
