BELOIT — City of Beloit police have arrested a Beloit College student who reported derogatory racial and religious graffiti on the door of his dorm after he admitted to writing the messages himself, according to a City of Beloit Police Department news release.
Michael Kee, 20, was arrested on charges of obstruction, disorderly conduct and criminal damage regarding the incident, which was reported Jan. 30, according to the release.
When met with questioning after reporting the incident, Kee admitted to writing the graffiti himself after seeing the way the campus came together around a separate reported hate crime and said he wanted the same attention, according to the news release.
“The false report by Kee may only serve to delegitimize other victims of these types of egregious offenses. However, we believe it is important for our community to know that Kee’s incident does not diminish our resolve going forward with these reported incidents and any other reported crimes of this nature,” the news release read.
He maintained his innocence in a Facebook posting and claimed he made the confession under duress. Kee also said he was not read his rights prior to his arrest.
City of Beloit police officials would not comment on Kee’s Facebook remarks.
