A female police officer in New Mexico was brutally beaten by a wanted man- and could have suffered a much worse fate had two individuals not stepped in to intervene.

The incident took place in Las Cruces, when a midnight trespassing call at a local gas station quickly turned into a much more dire situation.

The suspect, identified as Jonathan Montoya, had reportedly stolen a bicycle and was trespassing at the gas station.

When the female officer was about to take Montoya into custody, he quickly became violent.

Video from both security cameras and bodycam shows Montoya savagely beating the female officer, and attempting to take her weapon several times.

One individual witnessing the event attempts to come over and help, all while holding a child in his arms.

According to KRQE, the selfless and risky action was enough to entice Montoya to try and escape, only for him to be taken down by a second bystander.

The responding officer then took Montoya into custody and was checked out by medical personnel for injuries sustained in the line of duty.

Montoya, who was wanted on a bench warrant for failing to appear for a fentanyl possession case in court, was charged with battery on a police officer and for trying to take a police officer’s gun.
