Fullerton police say their officers tried to stop a vehicle for traffic violations early Monday morning, when the female driver just kept going, leading officers on a chase.

Fullerton police Sgt. Kathryn Hamel says at one point, the driver slowed down and 25 year old Shane Stephenson – one of the passengers—got out of the moving vehicle and began firing at officers.

According to an article in the LA Times, a short chase ensued, more gunfire erupted and with the help of other law enforcement agencies, and police were able to set up a perimeter and capture the suspect nearby.

Stephenson — who has an extensive criminal history according to police– was arrested and charged with attempted murder and felony assault on an officer. He was under supervision at the time of his arrest.

The other three people in the vehicle with Stephenson were also arrested.  “They were booked on suspicion of evading police, possessing narcotic paraphernalia and warrants,” police said.
