A late afternoon traffic stop in the city of New Smyrna Beach has left an officer injured and a suspect dead.

According to My News 13, the officer initiated a traffic stop around 4 p.m. Saturday afternoon. The driver of that car then sped away and began to drive recklessly through the streets into New Smyrna Beach.

Volusia County Sheriff’s Deputy, with the aid of New Smyrna Beach Police, used stop sticks on the runaway vehicle. The vehicle crashed next to an outdoor storage facility after it hit the stop sticks.

The driver then bailed out of his car and opened fire at the officers, striking one. A deputy returned fire and killed the suspect.

The New Smyrna Beach officer is said to be recovering well in the hospital.

Police have not identified the suspect or the officers involved.

The volley of bullets was captured on body cam video, and is set to be released at a later date.
