The Memphis Police Department has concluded its internal investigation into a traffic stop that turned into an altercation, left a man severely beaten, and eventually contributed to his death.
According to WREG, Tyre Nichols was stopped earlier this month for reckless driving. The initial officers say Nichols created a confrontation with them, took off running, and then another physical altercation occurred. Nichols was taken into custody and then transported to a hospital. Doctors say he suffered a broken neck and went into cardiac arrest because of the incident. He died three days later.
Memphis PD says the five officers broke multiple department policies and have been relieved of their duties. It has not yet released the incident’s body cam or patrol car video.
The Department says it will eventually release the video but must do so in accordance with the law.
The fired officers have not been charged, as of yet.
The incident brought national attention to the Memphis PD.
