Fatal Error: Fugitive on ATV tries to run over deputies in Kentucky

July 19–A Kentucky state trooper shot a man in Whitley County after the man tried to run over him with an ATV, according to Kentucky State Police.

State troopers and Whitley County sheriff’s deputies went to a home in the Rockholds community and found Billy Barnhill, 31, of Rockholds, “a wanted fugitive,” on an ATV at 4:20 p.m. Tuesday, according to state police.

As they approached, Barnhill “took off at a high rate of speed and attempted to run over several officers,” police said.

Officers pursued Barnhill north on Ky. 26 for several miles, onto Gilly Lane and into a wooded area.

One trooper walked into the woods to find Barnhill, who then turned the ATV around and rode at him “at a high rate of speed,” according to state police.

The trooper, who has not been publicly identified, “fired his service weapon at the suspect in self defense,” according to state police.

Barnhill was taken to University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital. No officers were injured.

State police said the trooper who shot Barnhill has been placed on administrative leave, as state police policy dictates. His name will be released later, state police said.

The state police critical response team in Frankfort is investigating.
