A young mother in New Mexico is facing felony charges after police say she lead them on a dangerous car chase — with her two, young children onboard.
KRQE News reports Shirlena Charley’s drunken crime spree started April 5 just before midnight.
First, officers received a call of a suspected drunk driver in a black SUV. When an officer caught up to the vehicle, Charley fled onto I-25 southbound and police chased it until the Big I.
Then, according to KRQE, dispatchers took calls of a driver nearly hitting other vehicles southbound on the Interstate, followed by a call that a black SUV crashed into the median on I-25. Finally, someone reported a black SUV hitting parked cars in a residential neighborhood.
When officers caught up to Charley, the SUV’s tires were blown and it was parked against a car on someone else’s private property, according to KRQE.
Portions of the arrest and the aftermath of the incident were captured on police bodycam video.
The video shows Charley standing outside her car, where KRQE reports the 23-year-old told one officer someone else was driving and they ran. But another officer says Charley told him that she was the driver, and that she had been drinking beforehand.
She’s given a field sobriety test, and then arrested. At one point she belligerently tells the officer, “F*** you, bald head,” as she’s being taken away.
The video also captures Charley’s two, young children in the car and officers asking the children if they’re okay.
The girls tell officers they are four and five years old. They tell officers they weren’t hurt despite the mayhem their mom allegedly caused.
When Charley gets to booking, she gets mouthy with the officer who arrested her, telling the officer to not “disrespect her like that.”
As the officer tells Charley her license is suspended, and she shouldn’t have been driving, she says, “I don’t give a s***, I know that.”
KRQE reports the criminal complaint says that at one point, Charley told officers she’s led police on five high-speed chases before and that next time, she’s not stopping.
Charley was booked on two felony counts of child abuse.
