An El Paso man was arrested on a capital murder charge Monday in connection with the death of a 1-year-old baby last week, police officials said.

The baby died Friday at El Paso Children’s Hospital from injuries that doctors described as “non-accidental,” police said in a news statement.

Homicide detectives arrested Marvin Rex Lake, 24, who was supposed to have been caring for the boy and two siblings while their mother was at work, police said.

An investigation began early April 13 after the baby was taken to El Paso Children’s Hospital with a skull fracture and several other injuries, police said.

The baby, an infant and a toddler had been left in the care of Lake at his apartment in the 500 block of Rubin Drive in West El Paso, police said. The children reside at a home on Fairbanks Drive in the Northeast.

Shortly before midnight, the children’s mother returned from work and found the baby unconscious, police said. The baby was taken to the hospital in critical condition and placed on life support before he died on Friday.

Police officials initially released the name of the child who died but later asked that his name not be published because of the ongoing investigation.

Detectives with the Crimes Against Children Unit are investigating the condition of the two other small children who also allegedly had injuries.

Police officials said that Lake is being held without bond at the El Paso County Jail on a capital murder charge.
