Over Labor Day weekend, a naked man in a Jeep in Dearborn was seen by several people as he pleasured himself while driving.

Police identified the man as Michael Tew, a 62-year-old Dearborn resident.

He was arrested Sept. 7 after a short investigation, and arraigned on one count of felony indecent exposure/sexually delinquent person, and one misdemeanor count of aggravated indecent exposure.

According to the Eastern Michigan University website, Tew is an associate provost and associate vice president for academic programming and strategy at the school.

“We are troubled and concerned about this reported incident,” EMU spokesman Walter Kraft said. “Upon learning about this matter from Dearborn police yesterday, the university took immediate action and suspended the individual indefinitely, pending the outcome of the investigation and legal proceedings. They are not permitted to come to campus during the suspension. We are not aware of any inappropriate conduct or actions of this nature related to their work on campus.”

EMU removed a link on its website that offered Tew’s services as an expert, but he was still listed as faculty, identifying him as a communications, media and theatre arts faculty member.

According to RateMyProfessor.com, Tew was well-liked as a professor. He was rated 26 times on the site, with a 4.4 out of 5 overall rating.

Witnesses to the man’s actions over the Labor Day weekend were able to get his license plate number and call police, who tracked him down and arrested him.

“This sort of conduct is illegal and will not be tolerated in Dearborn,” Police Chief Issa Shahin said. “I’d like to commend the concerned citizen for documenting the incident and bringing it to our attention.”

Tew was arraigned before Judge Gene Hunt of the 19th District Court and was issued a $20,000/10% cash bond.

A probable cause conference is scheduled for Sept. 23 with a preliminary examination of the evidence against him set for Sept. 30.
